BUILDING THE BASE, SECONDARY ELA/SS
This five-day institute focuses on the design and implementation of equitable participation structures and processes in secondary English Language Arts/Literacy classrooms. It is through these structures that we simultaneously develop conceptual, analytic, and language practices for intermediate to advanced English Learners. Rather than simplifying content for students, participants in this institute will learn ways to amplify lessons and complex texts and create invitations for English Learners to engage in productive activity that leads to educational excellence. Accordingly, some of the topics participants will learn in this institute include:
-
How a sociocultural approach to pedagogy promotes equity and quality for secondary English Learners’ classroom experiences
-
How to develop students’ autonomy to read, discuss, and write about informational and narrative texts in multiple contexts
-
How to engage students in close and careful reading of complex texts by participating in authentic tasks
-
How to foster the development of oracy
-
How to use the QTEL approach to design lesson plans that incorporate multiple scaffolded tasks to support students’ acquisition of standards-based content and academic language and access grade level texts
