BUILDING THE BASE, SECONDARY SCIENCE
Educators who participate in this five-day institute will experience and analyze the learning opportunities that challenge and support English Learners to develop deep, scientific understanding as they engage in scientific practices with their peers. When learning opportunities are designed to foreground participation by design, English Learners are able to develop conceptual, analytic, and language practices. Rather than simplifying content for students, participants in this institute will learn ways to amplify lessons and complex texts that create invitations for English Learners to engage in productive activity that leads to educational excellence. Accordingly, some of the topics participants will learn in this institute include:
-
How a sociocultural/ecological approach to pedagogy promotes equity and quality for secondary English Learners’ classroom experiences
-
How to develop students’ autonomy to read, discuss, create, and write multimodal texts to develop scientific literacy
-
How to foster the development of oracy
-
How to use the QTEL approach to design lesson and/or unit plans that incorporate multiple scaffolding tasks to support students’ acquisition of standards-based content and academic language to access grade level texts
