KATHIA ROMO
Senior Program Associate
Kathia Romo is a Senior Program Associate specializing in English Learner Support with WestEd’s English Learner and Migrant Education Services (ELMES). Romo designs and conducts professional learning for teachers, instructional leaders, and site administrators on the implementation of quality learning opportunities for English Learners, with an emphasis on the elementary grade levels. She also provides professional learning and instructional support through institutes on elementary literacy, dual language, language analysis, academic discourse, and close reading and writing, as well as coaching teachers through planning and instructional cycles.
Romo affords guidance and support to schools with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, CA ELA/ELD Framework, CA English Language Development (ELD) Standards, WIDA Standards, and any related state and locally-adopted curriculum frameworks.
Prior to joining WestEd, Romo was an English Learner Support Teacher in the San Diego Unified School District, where she provided professional development and coaching for teachers, as well as provided language instruction for EL/MLLs and newcomers. She received a BA in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, San Diego with a minor in Spanish Literature. Romo also holds a Master’s degree in Collaborative Educational Leadership from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara and a Preliminary Administrator’s Credential in California. She also maintains her multiple subject teaching credential for elementary instruction.
