2023 QTEL Summer Institutes in Santa Cruz

The week of July 17, we kicked off our Santa Cruz QTEL Summer Institutes with Annette Gregg, director of English Learner & Migrant Education Services at WestEd, delivering the keynote address.

Our keynote speaker for day three of the institutes was Dr. Nelson Flores who presented From Academic Language to Language Architecture.

Later he said, "When I was an early career teacher I had the opportunity to attend Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) with the amazing Aida Walqui. Many years later I got to be a keynote at the QTEL Summer Institute with her in the front row and my academic brother Haiwen Chu introducing me."

On Wednesday, Dr. Aída Walqui introduced Dr. Francisco Jiménez, author of The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child, who delivered his keynote Living and Writing a Migrant’s Life. Following the presentation, we had a reception for all institute participants where Dr. Jiménez, Dr. Flores, and their partners joined us.
